RICHMOND, Va. – A pair of Rams will represent VCU on the world golf stage later this month.
Â
Junior
Mattias Varjun (Tallinn, Estonia) and freshman
Clemente Silva (Santiago, Chile) will play for their respective native countries Aug. 24-Sept. 3 at the World Amateur Team Championships outside of Paris, France.
Â
The Championship will be contested at a pair of historic courses, Le Golf National (Albatross Course), the host venue for the French Open since 1991 and the 2008 Ryder Cup, as well as Saint-Nom-La-Breteche (Red Course), home of the Lancome Trophy for 34 years.
Â
Established in 1958, the International Golf Federation organizes the World Amateur Team Championships every two years. The men's competition could feature up to 72 nations, including defending champion Denmark.
Â
Varjun and Silva are both newcomers to the VCU program. Varjun was a three-year standout at Middle Tennessee State prior to transferring to the Rams and second-year Head Coach
Andy Walker. A native of Santiago, Chile, Silva will be one of three freshmen in Walker's initial VCU recruiting class.
