PAIR OF RAMS TO COMPETE AT WORLD AMATEUR TEAM GOLF CHAMPIONSHIPS

RICHMOND, Va. – A pair of Rams will represent VCU on the world golf stage later this month.

Junior Mattias Varjun (Tallinn, Estonia) and freshman Clemente Silva (Santiago, Chile) will play for their respective native countries Aug. 24-Sept. 3 at the World Amateur Team Championships outside of Paris, France.

The Championship will be contested at a pair of historic courses, Le Golf National (Albatross Course), the host venue for the French Open since 1991 and the 2008 Ryder Cup, as well as Saint-Nom-La-Breteche (Red Course), home of the Lancome Trophy for 34 years.

Established in 1958, the International Golf Federation organizes the World Amateur Team Championships every two years. The men's competition could feature up to 72 nations, including defending champion Denmark.

Varjun and Silva are both newcomers to the VCU program. Varjun was a three-year standout at Middle Tennessee State prior to transferring to the Rams and second-year Head Coach Andy Walker. A native of Santiago, Chile, Silva will be one of three freshmen in Walker's initial VCU recruiting class.
