LOONEY, RAMS STAMPEDE TO VICTORIES IN MEXICO

Tournament: Monterrey Collegiate Classic
Location: Monterrey, Mexico (Club Campestre Monterrey)
Course info: Par 72, 7,258 yards
VCU Finish: 1st of 12 (-30)
Top Ram: Carson Looney, 1st (-10)

The short story: Freshman Carson Looney and senior Braden O'Grady finished 1-2 as VCU ran away with the team title at the Monterrey Collegiate Classic behind a blistering performance this week in Mexico. The victory is VCU's first under second-year Head Coach Tyler Schmutz.

FIRST TEE
  • Looney, a Bethesda, Md. native, shot 70-66-70 to finish 10-under and score a 3-stroke win atop the leaderboard. His victory is the first by a Ram since O'Grady captured the Island Resort Collegiate in 2024
  • VCU, in one of the finest performances in program history, laid waste to the field. The Rams shot 30-under overall, 20 strokes better than runners-up UT-Rio Grande Valley and Richmond. Loyola Maryland (-8) and George Washington (-2) rounded out the top five
  • O'Grady fired a final-round 67 on the way to a 7-under (71-71-67) performance
  • Senior Jake Conklin also booked a top-10 effort. He overcame a first-round 74 with a furious 67-69 finish on the way to a share of sixth
  • Sophomore Tanner Cadieux (68-74-69) and freshman Rami Samawi (69-71-71), who was playing as an individual, tied for 10th for the Black and Gold at 5-under

NOTABLE
  • VCU's 30-under score is the third-lowest to par in school history. Only a 36-under effort at the 2022 VCU Invitational and a 31-under result at the 2019 Joe Feaganes Marshall Invitational were better. The Rams total of 834 is also tied for the program's fourth-lowest across 54 holes
  • The Rams' team title is its first tourney crown since its 2024 Atlantic 10 Conference Championship
INSIDE THE SCORECARD
  • VCU topped the field in both Par 3 (3.08) and Par 5 (4.47) scoring. The Rams were second (4.02) in Par 4 scoring
  • The Rams also raked in a tournament-best 65 birdies, including 14 each from Conklin and Felts
  • Looney's 3.73 stroke average was best in the field in Par 4 holes, while Cadieux (2.83) and O'Grady (4.17) tied for the tournament leads in Par 3 and Par 5 scoring, respectively
NEXT UP
VCU's fall season is complete. The Rams will return to the links Feb. 9-10, 2026 at the Bentwater Intercollegiate in Houston, Texas.
