The short story: Freshman Carson Looney stormed out of the gate with an opening-round 67 to help stake VCU to an early lead at the Atlantic 10 Conference Championship in Orlando, Fla.
 
FIRST TEE

• Looney, who owns a pair of first-place finishes this season, shot a bogey-free first round to climb atop the leaderboard at 5-under. He ripped three of his five birdies on the day back-to-back-to-back on holes No. 13, 14 and 15 on the way to the lead
• Behind Looney, VCU combined for 285 strokes, good for 3-under par and a 1-shot lead over George Mason. Dayton (+5) and George Washington (+7) are close behind
• Senior Braden O'Grady recorded an eagle on No. 2, a 548-yard Par 5, and shot 1-under on Monday for the Black and Gold. He currently sits fifth on the leaderboard
• Senior Mason Minkel overcame a bumpy front nine to shoot a 1-over 73 for VCU. He's 14^th through 18
