WOMEN'S SOCCER FALLS SHORT VERSUS WILLIAM & MARY, 1-0

Box Score

Final Score: William & Mary 1, VCU 0
Location: Sports Backers Stadium (Richmond, Va.)
Records: VCU 2-3-1, William & Mary 4-2-0

The Short Story: A total of 13 shots on goal would be the offensive story for the VCU Rams Thursday night in a matchup against in-state rival, the William & Mary Tribe. However, a lone goal by the Tribe's Sarah Segan and 13 saves from goalkeeper Grace Smith would give William & Mary a 1-0 victory over the Black and Gold in the contest.

QUICK FACTS

  • The Rams would total 22 shots altogether, with 13 on net, while the Tribe pumped in nine shots with three on net.
  • VCU also took a total of 11 corner kicks during the match, including a stretch of four in four consecutive plays (over a two minute span).
  • Seven Rams took at least two shots, with four of those also taking three or more. Julia Suarez led the pack for the night with five total shots, while Megan Dell took four. All four of Dell's shots were on net, leading the team in that category.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • VCU had the first good opportunity of the match in the eighth minute, as Megan Dell sent a shot destined to slide just under the cross bar. It would require a tough save from Tribe goalkeeper Grace Smith to punch the ball over the bar and keep things scoreless early.
  • It would be the Tribe to strike first in the 16th minute of the contest, as a great through pass into the 18 yard box from Mackenzie Kober helped Sarah Segan to notch her third goal of the season for William & Mary, putting them ahead 1-0.
  • In the 34th minute, a service pass into the six-yard box led to a header from Isabella Muzo. However, Smith was able to read the play and make the save. That kept the score 1-0 in favor of William & Mary into halftime.
  • Three great tries at the net by VCU to start the half put some momentum in the Rams corner heading into the middle part of the second half. It would help lead to three VCU corner kick opportunities up through the 62nd minute.
  • Dell would have a solid chance at the net with a free kick in the 62nd minute, but Smith would turn her strike away for a save.
  • A long sequence of corners that featured four in a row by the Rams saw two headers by Maddi Santo, both blocked en route toward the net.
  • The last 10 minutes saw multiple opportunities at the net, capped by a shot off the crossbar in the 89th minute from Susanna Friedrichs, keeping the Rams scoreless. That would be the last hoorah, as the Rams would fall short through the 90 minutes, 1-0.
