Rams drop 1-0 overtime heartbreaker at Liberty

Box Score

The Basics

  • Score: Liberty 1, VCU 0 – Final (OT)
  • Records: VCU (1-6), Liberty (2-4-1)
  • Location: LU Soccer Complex – Lynchburg, Va.
  • The Short Story: Despite firing off 18 shots, 11 which were on target, the VCU women's soccer team suffered a heartbreaking overtime loss at in-state foe Liberty on Sunday afternoon. Senior goalkeeper Emma Kruse recorded five saves in the match, while freshman Julia Suarez ripped off six shots of her own on the day.
How It Happened
  • Suarez would test the Flames early and often, forcing the LU keeper to make two diving saves in the first 15 minutes of the contest.
  • Senior Gabby Dyer tried to get VCU on the board before the half, but both of her shot attempts were knocked down.
  • Dyer and freshman Margaret Boelman fired off back to back shots in the 41st minute, but both were saved by the LU keeper to keep the game scoreless.
  • Suarez would have the best VCU chance of the afternoon in the 63rd minute, but a Flame defender was able to turn it away just in time to keep it knotted at 0-0.
  • After finishing regulation scoreless, VCU earned a corner less than five minutes, but after not being able to capitalize, LU turned around and got the game-winner with less than five minutes to play in the overtime period.
How It Happened
  • "Despite the result today, our young team is growing. We deserved better than a loss today but that is the sometimes cruel game we play. We have to do a better job of finishing our chances. We had five quality chances within the first 20 minutes that should have put the game away. The longer you allow a team to stay in a game and have hope, the more chance you leave for an upset and that is exactly what happened today. We have to finish our chances. Period." - Head Coach Lindsey Martin
Up Next
  • VCU is back on the road next Friday when they head to Penn for a Friday night showdown. Kickoff in Philadelphia is set for 7 p.m.
