Tournament: Elon Phoenix Invitational
Location: Alamance Country Club
Course Info: Par 71, 6,867 Yards
VCU Finish: 3rd (+9)
Top Ram: Adam Ball, 1st (-9)
FIRST TEE
- Senior Adam Ball scorched the course on the way to a final-round 66 and a 1-stroke victory Tuesday at the Elon Phoenix Invitational at Alamance Country Club.
- It's the fourth career collegiate win for Ball, the reigning Atlantic 10 Conference individual medalist.
- VCU (+9) placed third among the 16-team field. East Carolina (-19) cruised to victory, followed by Charleston Southern (+4) and the Rams.
- Ball opened the tournament with back-to-back 2-under 69s Monday to grab a share of second place. But he really hit his stride Tuesday.
- The Richmond native was even when he made the turn Tuesday, but opened the back nine with birdies on three of the first four holes. He then closed with back-to-back birds on 17 and 18 to secure the victory.
- Hanish Nagrani (+6) tied for 20th for the Rams, while Steffen Harm and Jamie Clare (+8) earned a share of 27th.
NOTABLES
- VCU's finish is its highest in a tournament this fall.
- Ball's total score of 204 is tied for fourth-best in program history. Three players have recorded 54-hole scores of 202 in VCU history, including Ball, last season.
- With four career victories, Ball has tied Ted Brown for second-most on VCU's career list. Only current PGA Tour pro John Rollins (6) has more.
QUOTABLE
- "I spent a lot more time with Adam this week because his swing looked like he should be scoring better than he has been. I really just saw that he has been getting better since he hurt his foot. He had hurt his foot, and he couldn't get to his left side like he needed to. But he's been getting better. He hit it pretty good, and he didn't make that many putts. It certainly wasn't the best he's played, but it's the best golf he's played from tee to green this semester. He's starting to hit it good now, so hopefully next week it comes together." – VCU Coach Matt Ball.
