Women's Soccer

Wojcik, Suarez lead Rams past La Salle, 4-1

Box Score

The Basics

  • Score: VCU 4, La Salle 1
  • Records: VCU (7-7-1, 5-1 A-10), La Salle (6-7-2, 2-2 A-10)
  • Location: McCarthy Stadium – Philadelphia, Pa.
  • The Short Story: Birthday girl Sharon Wojcik had a goal and two assists to lead the VCU women's soccer team to a dominating 4-1 road victory against perennial Atlantic 10 power La Salle on Sunday afternoon. Freshman Julia Suarez scored two second-half goals secure the win.

How It Happened

  • Wojcik and the Rams wasted little time getting on the scoreboard. Amanda Hallesjo lifted a corner kick into the box and Wojcik blasted a one-timer into the back of the net to give VCU a 1-0 lead just 1:16 into the game.
  • The two teams would battle for possession for the majority of the first half until Wojcik struck again, ripping a shot off the La Salle keeper's hands, junior Tori Burress was there to put it away and give the Rams a 2-0 halftime advantage.
  • Suarez added to VCU's lead in the 62nd minute, when she took a pass from Wojcik and fired into the back of the net to push the lead to 3-0.
  • Less than four minutes later, Suarez struck again to make it 4-0.
  • La Salle added a goal in the 76th minute, but it wasn't enough as the Rams won for the sixth time in the past seven games.

Quotable

  • "We knew today would be a physical battle and a tough game on the road. We came with a game plan and executed well. The team put in a great performance with some really special individual efforts. It was nice to get on the board early and we never took our foot off the gas. Players of the match would be Sharon Wojcik with a goal and two assists and Julia Suarez with two goals. Unsung players of the match were Dallas Smith and Tori Burress." – Head Coach Lindsey Martin
  • "We knew it was key for us to win today on the road, after coming off a loss. We came out with a game plan in mind and stuck to it. Getting a goal in early really helped us settle into the game and we kept finishing our opportunities. It was a great team effort and felt good to get the win on my birthday." – Senior Sharon Wojcik
What's Next
  • The Rams are back on the road on Thursday, October 22 when they travel to George Mason. Kick off in Fairfax is set for 7 p.m.
