  • Records: VCU (3-6-1, 1-0), Davidson (4-6, 0-1)
  • Location: Alumni Field – Davidson, N.C.
  • The Short Story: Kailyn Slade and Sharon Wojcik each found the net as VCU defeated Davidson to kick-off Atlantic-10 Conference play. Slade scored three goals on the night to provide the offensive spark for the Black and Gold. Her first collegiate hat trick carried the team to victory. The senoir now leads the team in goals scored, followed by Wojcik and freshman Julia Suarez. The Rams have outscored opponents 11-3 in their last three matches.

How It Happened

  • Davidson got on the board in the 8th minute to take an early 1-0 lead.
  • Suarez hit the crossbar on a header, but Kailyn Slade was there for the rebound, scoring her second goal of the season to tie the game at 1-1 in the 35th minute.
  • Moments later, Wojcik drilled a penalty kick to put VCU ahead.
  • Davidson quickly responded with their own equalizer as the teams headed to the break tied 2-2.
  • In the 58th minute, Slade dribbled the ball all the way from midfield into the box, making a move past a defender and sending a shot past the near post give the Rams the lead for good. She later completed the hat trick when she found the net off of a VCU corner kick. Tori Burress and Amanda Hallesjo assisted on the play.
  • Emma Kruse and the defense shut down the Wildcat attack in the last 45 as VCU earned their first victory of the season against an Atlantic-10 Conference rival.

Quotable

  • "We were able to find the back of the net 4 times this evening against a solid team. I was especially proud that despite going down a goal early, we fought back to equalize and then some. Kay had a special night with a three goal performance, one of which came off of an unassisted 70 yard drive down the heart of the Davidson defense. She was really fantastic for us today. Tori Burress also did a great job for us in the second half. Fought for loose balls, connected passes, won set pieces, and as always worked her tail off." - Head Coach Lindsey Martin
  • "It was a total team effort with the first week of conference play. For us, it was a chance to start with a clean slate and I'm proud of the resilience we showed tonight after getting down 1-0. Now we're focused on continuing to make progress as we go through a tough conference schedule." - Senior Kailyn Slade
