VCU Takes Down Pitt on the Road, 1-0

Box Score

The Basics

  • Score: VCU 1, Pittsburgh 0
  • Records: VCU (2-3-2), PITT (4-4-0)
  • The Short Story: Junior Sharon Wojcik scored the game's only goal early on, and the Rams only held Pitt to two shots on goal en route to a 1-0 victory.

How it Happened:

  • Wojcik registered the game's only goal, putting one past goalkeeper Taylor Francis in the 21st minute, her first goal of the season. Junior Abby Ritter was credited with an assist.
  • VCU outshot Pittsburgh by a wide margin, 15-7. Four of the Rams' shots were on goal, doubling Pitt's total. In the first half alone.
  • The lone goal shouldn't have come as a surprise; in the first half VCU outshot Pitt 11 to two, so opportunities were plentiful in the first 45 minutes.
  • Tonight was sophomore goalkeeper Emma Kruse's second shutout in three games.

Quotable:

  • "It was a full team effort tonight on the road to get the win. I thought we looked sharp all around and really got after it early. Pitt failed to match our intensity and physicality until late in the second half and we were able to weather the storm in the waning minutes. Our goal came from a great service on a corner by Abbey and Sharon connected with it for a great finish off her head. It was a solid win and hopefully one we can build upon. No game is more important than the next one and right now our sights are on American for Sunday." - Head Coach Lindsey Vanderspiegel
  • "Getting the win tonight on the road was huge for us. We started off strong and kept our momentum high throughout the game. From the front line to the back, it was a full team effort that allowed us to win this one. And getting the game winner just added on to the excitement" - Junior Sharon Wojcik
