The Basics

  • Score: Clemson 4, VCU 1
  • Records: VCU (0-2-2), Clemson (4-0-0)
  • Location: VCU's Sports Backers Stadium inside the HDL, Inc. Athletic Village – Richmond, Va.
  • The Short Story: Senior Maren Johansen scored in her third straight game, but the VCU women's soccer team dropped its 2014 home opener to ACC foe Clemson, 4-1, on Sunday afternoon. Johansen has already tied her previous career high with five goals this season.
How It Happened
  • Clemson's offense, which came into the game averaging nearly five goals a game, was kept silent for the first 25 minutes, mustering only three shots over that span.
  • The Tigers came alive when Catrina Atanda rifled a free kick into the top right corner of the goal in the 29th minute to give Clemson a 1-0 advantage.
  • A little over eight minutes later, Tina Shakes got loose and scored from nearly 30 yards out to send the Tigers into the break with a 2-0 lead.
  • Clemson would add another goal in the first seven minutes of the second half before Johansen took a pass from Kailyn Slade and slid her fifth goal of the season into the back of the net to make it 3-1 in the 65th minute
  • The Tigers added one more in the 69th minute to round out the scoring on the afternoon.
Quotable
  • "We looked more organized on both sides of the ball today. We were unfortunate to have a few mistakes that Clemson was able to capitalize on. We need to clean up our defensive performance at this stage of the season. Our non-conference schedule is not easy and we are learning more about ourselves each week. Hopefully it pays off come conference time." – Head Coach Lindsey Vanderspiegel
