RICHMOND, Va. – In the famous comic series "The Hulk", Bruce
Banner only turns into a furious green monster when he's made
mad.
The Virginia Commonwealth University women's soccer team may be
taking on that same personality as the Rams bounced back from a
tough defeat at Central Florida on Sunday with a 3-0 throttling of
in-state rival Liberty at VCU's Sports Backers Stadium on Friday
evening.
"This is exactly what we were looking for coming off the loss to
a tough UCF team," Co-Head Coach Tiffany Roberts
Sahaydak said. "We were looking for a lot of energy and
aggressiveness from our girls and that's just what they did."
Freshman Bex Kunz (Boise,
Idaho) and sophomore Bre White (Manassas,
Va.) continue to prove they are a potent offensive duo.
Kunz tallied two goals and an assist, while White registered her
fourth goal in the past five games as well as picking up an
assist.
" It's been great being able to play with a player like Bre and
it's really easy for us to work off of each other," Kunz said. "We
really have a great feel for each other up top and I feel like we
can continue to grow with each game."
On the other side of the field for the Rams, the back four
helped register the third shutout of the season for VCU, allowing
just four shots and one corner in the contest.
"Our defense is the foundation of this team and it showed again
tonight," Roberts Sahaydak said. "Those back four have been playing
together for a while and we aim to pitch a shutout every game. When
we're able to accomplish that, it's always a positive."
The Black & Gold wasted little time getting on the board when
freshman Taryn Cressy
(Boise, Idaho) lofted a long pass to White, who streaked
down the right sideline and fed Kunz who lofted a long shot into
the upper left corner to give the Rams a 1-0 lead just 0:57 into
the game.
Kunz hooked her teammate up just 19 minutes when she sent a
beautiful cross to White, who blasted a shot inside the left post
from eight yards out to push the lead to 2-0.
Just five minutes later, Kunz picked up a loose ball on the left
sideline and lofted another long shot, this time it fell just
inside the right post for her second goal of the game and a 3-0
advantage for the Black & Gold.
The defense preserved the lead from there, allowing just one
shot the rest of the way, and helping freshman Megan Lynch
(Lake Mary, Fla.) pitch her collegiate third shutout.
VCU is back in action on Thursday evening when they take on
cross-town rival Richmond at Ukrop's Park in a 7 p.m. contest.
