WILMINGTON, N.C. – One thing is for sure, the seven underclassmen in the starting lineup for the Virginia Commonwealth University women's soccer team will be battled tested.

The Rams played in their sixth one-goal game of the 2010 and unfortunately it was the fourth loss of those contests. Friday night it was a 2-1 loss to the defending Colonial Athletic Association Champion UNC Wilmington.

"I have to give UNC Wilmington credit. Neither team really got a ton of chances, but they did a good job of capitalizing on their opportunities," Co-Head Coach Tiffany Roberts Sahaydak said. "With that, I'm really proud of the way our girls continue to fight and battle throughout the game."

Both teams registered shots on goal in the first eight minutes of the contest, but both keepers were able to notch saves to keep the game scoreless heading into the 18^th minute. That's when the Seahawks' leading scorer Stephanie Rose deposited a penalty kick into the back of the net to give UNCW a 1-0 advantage.

The defenses would take over for the rest of the first half with only two shots tallied over the final 25 minutes of the first half.

VCU would come out of the intermission aggressive and finally hit pay dirt when sophomore Aisha Allen fed freshman Bex Kunz at the top of the box. Kunz found classmate Taryn Cressy, who was wide open, and rocketed her first collegiate goal into the bottom left corner of the net to even the score at 1-1.

"It's no secret we've been struggling to score and that's why I'm so proud of our girls sticking together and continuing to battle for that goal," Roberts Sahaydak said.

UNC Wilmington would put pressure on the Rams late in the second half and finally took the lead for good when Kim Currie fed Amanda Holmes, who sped down the right sideline and fired a shot into the upper middle of the net for a 2-1 Seahawk lead.

Most of the contest was played in the middle with less than 20 shots fired in the contest and only one corner kick.

The Black & Gold will hit the pitch again on Sunday when they head to Atlanta, Ga. to take on the Panthers of Georgia State University in a 12 p.m. contest.
