WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – In athletics, there is always a time when
things just click for certain players. There is no forecast on when
it's coming, it just happens.
For junior Azania of the Virginia Commonwealth
University women's soccer team, that time has come. The
thrifty forward from Brazil tallied two more goals, but it
wasn't enough as the Rams dropped a 3-2 decision to William
& Mary on Sunday afternoon in Colonial Athletic Association
play.
"Zani has been a great lift for us the past couple
games," Co-Head Coach Tiffany Roberts
Sahaydak said. "She's worked really hard in
training and she is really taking advantage of her opportunities,
we're very happy for the success she is having. It's
never a good thing to lose, but as a coaching staff there were a
lot of positives we saw from today's game."
Azania has now scored five goals in the past three games for the
Black & Gold, which is all but two of VCU's goals over
that span.
On Sunday, the Tribe needed a win to stay in the CAA Tournament
picture and their hunger was evident right with two goals in the
first 10 minutes to quickly jump out to a 2-0 advantage.
VCU would settle in and start to gain possession when Azania
picked up possession deep in the offensive end and slipped a shot
right under Tribe goalkeeper to bring the Rams within one at 2-1 in
the 17th minute.
William & Mary would put some late first half pressure on
the Rams, but freshman keeper Megan Lynch logged a
career-high seven saves and kept VCU within striking distance
heading into halftime.
The Tribe would once again start fast in the second half with a
goal from Lauren Gough less than five minutes into the second half,
pushing their lead to 3-1.
Azania wouldn't let William & Mary get too far as she
took a feed from classmate Heather Hovanesian
(pictured, right) and got loose on a breakaway, firing her
second goal of the game into the back of the net in the
50th minute to bring VCU within one at 3-2.
The Rams would try to find the equalizer, but the Tribe defense
would lock down and prevent that from happening.
VCU will return to action next weekend in the season finale at
James Madison on Friday night. Game time in Harrisonburg is set for
7 p.m.
