RICHMOND, Va. – In the fifth edition of D1Baseball's Top 100 college baseball program rankings, VCU rose once again to achieve its highest grade yet, landing at No. 64, the publication released Thursday.
With its program rankings, D1Baseball aims to identify programs that have "establish[ed] a tradition of consistent winning in the last decade, and especially in the last five years." VCU has stood tall among the organization's top 100 programs in the nation since the inaugural release in 2015.
The Rams climbed to No. 64 following a pair of Atlantic 10 Championships and NCAA tournament appearances in 2022 and 2024. In the previous list in 2022, VCU reached a then-program best 67
th after claiming the A-10 title and making a visit to the NCAA postseason in 2021. The Rams continue to raise the ceiling with their on-field success.
"VCU baseball and our staff are incredibly proud of the tradition and winning culture that we have developed throughout our long history," Head Coach
Sean Thompson said. "We have been fortunate to have unbelievable young men who love wearing the black and gold who have continued to push this program forward in recent years."
The D1Baseball staff analyzed programs' performances into the postseason, and adjusted rankings with evaluations of "coaching staff quality and stability, facilities… and recruiting and player development proficiency," among other factors.
Since its transition to the A-10 in 2013, VCU has amassed over 400 wins, picking up four conference tournament championships on top of three regular season titles. The Rams have posted 38 or more victories in six of the last nine full-length seasons, making a postseason run to the NCAA Super Regionals in 2015 and totaling four NCAA Regional appearances in that time.
D1Baseball writer Mike Rooney's analysis noted that VCU has been a longstanding competitive program, citing seven victories in its four most recent NCAA tournament appearances, and calling the recent updates to the Rams' coaching staff "great news."
The defending A-10 Champion Rams elevated Thompson to head coach in the 2024 offseason. As VCU baseball enters into a new era, the commitment to building upon the program's decades of achievement remains unchanged.
"It is an honor for everyone involved in this program to be able to call VCU our home and get to represent this championship culture on the national stage of college baseball," Thompson continued. "We look forward to writing the next chapter in our baseball history and pushing this program to new heights."
"Let the good times roll," was Rooney's final statement.
