The short story: Freshman Grayson Wood fired a final-round 68 to cement his first collegiate victory and to help VCU put the finishing touches on a dominant team win at the Los Vaqueros Intercollegiate this week in Mexico.
 
FIRST TEE

• Wood shot 6-under overall on the week to secure a two-stroke triumph over Dylan Teeter of Texas El Paso. The VCU freshman weathered windy conditions on the way to an opening-day 75, then closed with rounds of 67 and 68, respectively, to charge to the top of the leaderboard
• VCU (+5) led wire-to-wire on the way to a 19-stroke victory over Texas El Paso and Lamar (+24). The Rams shot the best team score in the field in each of the tournament's three rounds
• Junior Tim Chan, playing as an individual, shot 3-under (74-67-72) to take third for the Black and Gold, while redshirt senior Mattias Varjun claimed a share of fifth at 2-over (74-72-72)
• Freshman Veikka Viskari (ninth), as well as sophomores Clementa Silva and Ugo Malcor (18^th) also finished inside the top 20 for VCU

• VCU's long game paved its road to victory. The Rams shot a combined 18-under on Par 5 holes, 15 strokes better than the next-best team in the field. The Rams also led the field in Par 4 scoring
• Wood (4.33), Malcor (4.50) and Chan (4.58) finished 1-2-3, respectively, in the field in Par 5 scoring
• Wood carded a team-high 14 birdies, while Chan logged 12

NOTABLE

• VCU has finished fourth, fourth, third, second and first, respectively, in five tournaments in 2023-24
• Wood's victory is the first by a Ram since Adrian Vagberg claimed medalist honors at the Atlantic 10 Conference Championship on May 1, 2022 in Orlando, Fla.
