The short story: Sophomore Ugo Malcor shot just the fourth 64 in school history and VCU recorded a top-3 finish in a fourth consecutive tournament this week at the Hal Williams Collegiate.

FIRST TEE
  • Malcor shot a bogey-free first round on Monday on the way to a career-best 64 and a place atop the leaderboard. He closed with back-to-back 71s to earn a share of fourth place, his best finish of the 2023-24 season
  • Behind Malcor's outstanding play, the Rams shot a combined 16-under for the 54-hole tournament to take third. Illinois, ranked 20th nationally, claimed the team crown at 25-under. No. 33 LSU (-22) was second. Davidson (-3) and Kansas State (-2) rounded out the top five
  • Junior Tim Chan followed up last week's outstanding spring debut with a 68-69-72 effort. He finished 10th at 4-under
  • Freshman Grayson Wood (1-under), senior Mattias Varjun (E), and freshman Veikka Viskari (2-over) rounded out the VCU lineup in 21st, 26th and 36th, respectively

INSIDE THE SCORECARD
  • Malcor was consistent throughout, as evidenced by his field-best 45 pars. He carded just one bogey in the tournament
  • Chan's 17 birdies tied for the tournament lead, and the junior college transfer averaged a tournament-best 4.11 on par 4 holes. Chan owns a team-high 29 birdies in two spring tournaments
NOTABLE
  • Malcor joins Ted Brown, Mark Jargren and Adrian Vagberg as the only Rams to shoot 64, and his 7-under score in the round trails only Brown's and Jargren's 8-under marks
  • VCU's first-round score of 273 ranks in the top 10 in program history in both total strokes and score relative to par (-11)
  • The Rams' 16-under mark for the tournament is tied for the ninth-lowest, relative to par, on the school's all-time list
  • VCU has not finished worse than fourth in six tournaments in 2023-24
  • Overall, the field included six top-100 teams
NEXT UP
VCU will return to action on Feb. 26-28 at the Lake Las Vegas Invitational at Reflection Bay Golf Club in Henderson, Nev.
