The Short Story:Â Freshman
Kayelyn Tate won the 60-meter dash for the second week in a row, and
Megan Bozarth came out on top in the triple jump to headline the day for VCU women's track & field in the Patriot Games at George Mason.
SPRINTS
- Tate ran had the best time in the 60m preliminaries at 7.58 seconds, followed it up with the best time in the semifinals at 7.65, and then capped it off by winning the final in 7.70. Tate also won the 60m last week at the Brant Tolsma Invitational in Lynchburg, Va.
- Freshman Ciara Joyner-Plata also made the final in the 60m, placing fifth overall and running a personal best time of 7.94 in the preliminaries
- Freshman Kayla Morris got a personal record as well in the 200-meter dash, sprinting one lap around the 200-meter track in a time of 27.68
- Freshman Naomi Clarke finished runner-up in the 500-meter dash, setting a new personal best of 1:17.59. Freshman Jordyn Evans came home fifth in 1:18.58, while junior Nia McMillan PR'd in 1:21.18

HURDLES
- The Rams got three women in the final of the 60-meter hurdles, led by junior Jailah Channer's third place in 9.31. Junior Taylor James was right behind her in fourth at 9.41, and sophomore Sophie Heinold completed the Ram triumvirate in fifth place at 9.45

DISTANCE
- Redshirt freshman Lauren Tunnell ran an impressive time of 5:10.44 in the one-mile run to notch a seventh-place finish
- The 4000-meter distance medley relay team of freshman Ava Miller, Clarke, sophomore Karrington Owens, and freshman Jayanna Carroll combined for a time of 12:38.92. That time is the third-best in the Atlantic 10 so far this season
- Sophomore Cassidy Guyton finished sixth overall in the 3000-meter run, going the distance in 10:38.04

JUMPS
- Bozarth went 11.18 meters (36'-8.25") on her winning jump, almost a full foot ahead of the runner-up
- Channer led a flock of Rams in the high jump, placing runner-up with a best clearance of 1.60 meters (5'-3"). Freshman Mariah Washington set a personal record at 1.55 meters (5'-1"), good for fifth place

THROWS
- Channer, James, and Heinold all competed in the shot put, posting best throws of 8.43 meters, 7.92 meters, and 5.56 meters, respectively

VCU track & field will split up the squad next weekend, with some athletes going to the Boston, Mass., area for Harvard's Crimson Elite Meet and Boston University's Bruce Lehane Scarlet and White Invitational on Friday, Feb.3 and Saturday, Feb. 4. Other members of the team will stay in Virginia for the Liberty Open on Saturday, Feb. 4 in Lynchburg, Va.
