SOPHOMORE THROWER COBY COCKRELL WINS THE SHOT PUT AT THE VINCE BROWN INVITE

Meet: Vince Brown Invitational

Results:  Vince Brown Invitational 

The Short Story: With only one meet left before the Atlantic 10 Indoor Championships, VCU's Men's Track & Field team exhibited great strides at the Vince Brown Invitational. The Rams had another victorious weekend, earning 16 top-ten finishes and numerous personal records while competing at Christopher Newport University on Sunday. 

Two of those top-10 placements included Sophomore Coby Cockrell's first-place finish in the shot put and his fourth-place finish in the weight throw. The Gretna, Va. native has been a consistent force for the Rams this season behind another strong showing at the VMI Team Challenge on Jan. 25 where he also finished in the top-ten. 

THROWS 

  • In just his third meet of the season, thrower Justin Barnett placed second in the shot put and set a personal best of 13.75m in the event. The freshman would also earn an eighth-place finish in the weight throw

SPRINTS/HURDLES

  • In the 60-meter sprint, Sophomore JeVon Waller earned a second-place finish, clocking a time of 6.86
  • Freshman sprinter Glendell Thompson placed seventh in the 400-meter and PRed in the race
  • Sophomore Mykalee Atkins secured eighth place in the 60-meter hurdles and set a personal record in the event

DISTANCE

  • Senior Bryce Catlett led the way for VCU's distance runners after finishing third in the mile with the PR of 4:23.35. Teammates Lucas Sidle and Archie Blaes, who also PRed in the race, would finish in fourth and fifth place, respectively. Sophomore Sean Moulton rounded out the group with an eight-place finish 

JUMPS

  • Freshman Christian DuBois and Sophomore Mykalee Atkins tied for eighth place in the high jump 

What's Next

The Rams head to Lynchburg, Va. to compete in the Darius Dixon Memorial Invite held on Friday, Feb. 14 and Saturday, Feb. 15.
