HOW IT HAPPENED
- Justin Sorokowski took the mound for his fourth start of the season Friday. He threw four scoreless innings and gave up just four hits. His four innings were the most he has thrown in an appearance this season.
- The Rams struggled to get going offensively, going hitless through the first five innings.
- The Mountaineers threatened to take the lead in the top of the sixth with a runner on third, but Maddison Furman came up with a massive strikeout to keep things scoreless.
- VCU's bats came alive in the bottom of the sixth to break the deadlock. Paul Witt had the Rams' first hit of the night with a one-out single to left field. Tyler Locklear followed with a hit that put runners on the corners for designated hitter Liam Hibbits. Hibbits delivered a double to left field to drive a run across and give VCU a 1-0 lead.
- Two more hits by Steven Carpenter and Logan Amiss gave the Rams a 4-0 lead after six complete innings.
- Solid relief pitching by Furman and Danny Watson kept WVU off the board through eight innings, preserving VCU's lead.
- The Mountaineers were able to crack the scoreboard in the bottom of the ninth, but Watson limited them to just one run to close out the VCU 4-1 victory.
