The Short Story: After a nice comeback win on Friday night, the VCU Rams ran into some jet lag in Saint Louis on Saturday as they would drop both games of a doubleheader to the Billikens snap their win streak at 14.
LEADING OFF
- Haiden Lamb was the bright light on the offensive side, going a solid 5-for-8 on the day with a double and walk to his name. He also scored VCU's lone run.
- Paul Witt chipped in with a pair of hits in Game 1, but snapped his 19-game hitting streak in Game 2. However, his two walks maintained his on-base streak.
- Liam Hibbits reached base three times on the day, with a hit in Game 1 and two walks in Game 2.
- Daane Berezo, Steven Carpenter, and Hunter Vay all had a hit apiece between the two games for the Rams.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Game 1
- The Billikens would score all seven runs in the first five innings of play, catching Sean Thompson for two right off the bat in the first after a throwing error.
- Devin Dunn would be a bright spot out of the bullpen, shutting down the Billikens for three straight innings in the sixth, seventh, and eighth. He would only allow one hit.
- VCU would get on the board in the sixth inning. With the bases loaded, a double play would get two outs but score a run. That would make things 7-1 as the game went into the back half.
- Saint Louis would collect a pair of runs in the third, and then score three runs all off errors in the fifth. After the fifth, it would stand 7-0 in favor of SLU.
Game 2
- Saint Louis would explode offensively between the second and the fifth innings. It all started with a three-run second, followed by a three-run third inning that was punctuated by a three-run home run from Carter Hanford. The big blast put Saint Louis up 6-0 after three.
- A two-run home run in the fourth by Alex King would extend the Billikens lead to 8-0 after four innings. Their ninth run would come on a double play ball in the fifth.
- VCU came close to breaking on the scoreboard in the fifth, as Carpenter led off with a one-out single. Lamb followed with a single. With two out, Witt would walk to load the bases. However, a strikeout to Mitchel Lacey would end the inning and the threat for the Rams.
