The Short Story: Putting in an appearance in the Atlantic 10 Championship game for the third time in four years for VCU gave what was a high level of confidence on Saturday. However, the Rams fell into a hot Davidson Wildcats team, who had to beat the Rams twice, and did, to claim their first A-10 Championship with a two-game sweep of the Rams to claim the title.
LEADING OFF
- Logan Farrar was the only Ram with multiple hits on the day, as he had two in Game 1 and three in Game 2. Farrar would be named to the A-10 All-Tournament team.
- Alex Gransback packed a strong punch in Game 1 as he smacked a grand slam home run, delivering four RBI.
- Mitchel Lacey would record a double on the day, while Paul Witt had two RBI.
HOW IT HAPPENED
GAME 1
- After a clean first inning by both sides, Davidson jumped on the board first in the top of the second inning. Brett Centracchio would smack a ball hard at Paul Witt, who could only get the out at second. That would allow a run to score, putting the Wildcats up 1-0.
- Cam Johnson would add to the lead in that top of the second, doubling down the right field line and bringing home another pair of runners. Davidson would lead 3-0.
- In the top of the third inning, Justin Lebek would do a lot of work for Davidson, hitting an RBI double, as well as scoring on a balk. Heading into the bottom of the third inning, Davidson had a 5-0 lead.
- That lead mounted to 7-0 in the top of the fourth, as Will Robertson connected for a double that scored two runs. That would end the day for VCU starter Michael Dailey.
- As the game entered the top of the fifth inning, the game would be suspended for over an hour and put on delay.
- Things stayed even keel after play resumed, until the bottom of the seventh inning. Lighting struck for VCU as they loaded the bases for Alex Gransback. He would launch a home run for his first career grand slam and pull VCU within striking distance at 7-4.
- But in the top of the eighth inning, Alec Acosta added the icing for Davidson as he knocked out a solo home run, putting up Davidson up for good, 8-4.
GAME 2
- VCU loaded the bases in the top of the first inning, but weren't able to bring home a run as things kept scoreless through the first three innings of play.
- A wild pitch would break the ice for VCU, giving them the first run of the ballgame as Daane Berezo would score from third.
- In the same at-bat, Paul Witt smacked a single through the left side, scoring both Gransback and Farrar to put VCU up 3-0.
- However in the bottom of the fourth, the flood gates of runs opened up, as a big bop from Will Robertson would start the carousel. Davidson would score 10 unanswered runs through seven full innings.
- In the top of the eighth inning, the Rams would get one back with an RBI groundout from Gransback. That would bring things to 10-4.
- But Davidson pitched well down the stretch, and swung the bats well as they put up one more run in the bottom of the eighth to take the 11-4 win.
