WOMEN'S SOCCER FALLS IN BARNBURNER, 3-2 AT JMU

Box Score

Final Score: James Madison 2, VCU 1
Location: Sentara Park (Harrisonburg, Va.)
Records: VCU 3-3-1, JMU 2-6-0

The Short Story: It would almost take the full 120 minutes to find a final score between the VCU Rams and James Madison Dukes on Friday night. After being down 2-0 in the second half, the Black and Gold fought back with goals from Maddi Santo and Julia Suarez to tie things up and send the match to overtime. But two goals from Ashley Herndon sent the Rams home with a 3-2 loss.

QUICK FACTS

  • VCU had a tough go of it in the first half, only collecting one shot in the first 45. However, they came out with five the rest of the contest. JMU had 21 total shots with 10 on net.
  • James Madison topped the Rams in corner kicks, 7-to-4, and also led by that same ratio in fouls for the match.
  • Goalkeeper Audrey Sanderson made seven saves on the night in taking the loss for the Rams.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • After putting on the pressure early, James Madison jumped out on the board first in the 16th minute, as Allison Bortell notched her first goal as traffic crowded in front of the net. Before VCU was able to clear, Bortell got the ball on her foot and rip a shot past Audrey Sanderson to put the Dukes up 1-0.
  • The only shot for VCU in the first half would come in the 27th minute, as Julia Suarez missed high with a shot.
  • The first half would end 1-0, and James Madison ensured that it didn't stay like that for long. The Dukes would grab one in the 46th minute, just as the second half started. Ashley Herndon would grab her fourth goal of the season, putting JMU up 2-0. She picked up a rebound off a shot from Sydney Braun-McLeod that came back off the crossbar.
  • The Rams would grab one back in the 56th minute, as Maddi Santo buried a shot from 12 yards out to cut the Dukes' lead to 2-1.
  • The Black and Gold would strike again in the 78th minute, as Julia Suarez broke behind the defense and would score on a breakaway. The goal tied the game 2-2 with just over 10 minutes to play.
  • With no tiebreakers scored before the 90-minute mark, things would head to overtime. JMU got the first solid chance in the 107th minute, as a ball was played in toward the box. But a heads-up read by both Brittany Beckwith and Audrey Sanderson would keep the ball out of the net and keep things scoreless through the first overtime.
  • Herndon would score her second goal of the night for JMU in the 115th minute, as she put home a rebound off the hands of Sanderson that fell right in the middle of the 18-yard box. The goal would give the Dukes the 3-2 win.
