Rams Defeated 12-4 on Dollar Dog Night

Box Score

Final Score: Monmouth 12, VCU 4

Location: The Diamond (Richmond, Va.)

Records: Monmouth 6-9 (0-0), VCU 10-6 (0-0)

The Short Story: VCU's baseball team hosted Monmouth on Dollar Dog Night at the Diamond on Wednesday, falling to the Hawks 12-4. Philadelphia's own Jimmy Kerrigan led the way at the plate for VCU with his fourth straight multi-hit game. The senior has eight so far this season.

LEADING OFF

  • Kerrigan went two-for-four at the dish, scoring twice and driving in three runs. The outfielder also launched his first home run of the season.
  • The double play combination of shortstop Matt Davis and Cooper Mickelson also collected a pair of hits apiece.
  • Defensive replacement Haiden Lamb recorded a base knock in his only plate appearance, picked up his second RBI of 2016.
    • Starting pitcher Matt Oxner was charged with six earned runs on five hits while striking out four and walking three in 3.2 innings on the mound.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Oxner cruised through three shutout innings before being tagged for six runs in the fourth.
  • Kerrigan doubled home right fielder Cody Acker in the bottom half of the frame to cut into the lead. Acker had reached base on an error by the third baseman.
  • The Rams added another run in the eighth when Lamb drove in Kerrigan with an opposite field, two out single to keep the inning alive.
  • Kerrigan smashed a two-run homer in the bottom of the ninth, but it would not be enough as the Rams dug themselves  too deep of a hole.

Out Of Left Field

  • Freshman Michael Dailey relieved Oxner on the bump, pitching 3.1 scoreless innings and striking out two. This was Dailey's third appearance for the Rams.
  • Kerrigan extended his hitting-streak to four games (all multi-hit games) and improved his team-batting average to .361. Kerrigan's 13 RBI's also lead the squad.
  • Despite 11 runs and 12 hits, the Rams struck out seven times on the night.
  • The Rams are 2-4 this season when allowing opponents to score 10 or more runs.
