THE BASICS:
For the sixth straight weekend the Rams come away with a series victory thanks to today's 6-0 victory over the Dayton Flyers. Heath Dwyer led the way with six shutout innings and offensively Jimmy Kerrigan led the way with four hits and a couple of RBI.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • Both pitchers came out throwing well enough that neither side was able to put any runs on the scoreboard until the fifth inning. Walker Haymaker's home run off of the scoreboard in left field gave the Rams a 1-0 lead.
  • The Rams loaded up the bases with no outs in the top of the sixth, though Daane Berezo's sacrifice fly drove in the only run of the inning.
  • Heath Dwyer kept the Flyers' offense at bay with another strong start. The lefty tossed six shutout innings today while striking out four. In his last four starts Dwyer has allowed just one earned run.
  • In the top of the eighth Jimmy Kerrigan slapped a single through the right side of the infield that scored Haiden Lamb from second to extend the Ram lead to 3-0.
  • Logan Farrar doubled in another run in the eighth to put VCU ahead 4-0. A couple of runs in the top of the ninth would help the Rams secure a 6-0 victory.
QUOTABLE: "I'm proud of the boys. Any time you get caught in a doubleheader like we did yesterday, and the guys still came out and took care of the series today. We played exceptional defense today, but the story again is Heath Dwyer pitching on Sundays. I believe he's won our last three Sunday starts for us and he's now thrown 12 straight scoreless innings on Sundays, so to have his experience and to be able to go to him in a series-clinching game is awesome for us. Proud of the way the guys fought, now we have to go back and get ready for a big week this week." -Head coach Shawn Stiffler

UP NEXT: VCU has a weekday matchup with Old Dominion this Wednesday in Norfolk before hosting George Mason next weekend for a three-game set.
