THE BASICS: In its first game of the season, VCU defeated Georgetown 6-3 to open up the Wake Forest Tournament on Friday afternoon. Senior Heath Dwyer went six innings and senior Daniel Concepcion pitched three in relief. Matt Davis, Cody Acker, and Cooper Mickelson had multi-hit days for the Rams.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Rams got on the scoreboard first today thanks to some great at-bats at the top of the order. Sophomore Logan Farrar led things off by working an 0-2 count into a leadoff walk and sophomore James Bunn took one for the team to put two men on with no outs. A sac fly from junior Jimmy Kerrigan put the first run on the board
- Senior Heath Dwyer made quick work of the Hoyas to start the game, retiring the first seven batters of the day, striking out three of them. The highlight of that stretch defensively was a nice diving catch out in left field by Bunn.
- Sophomore catcher Walker Haymaker blasted a home run to right field in the bottom of the second to put VCU up 2-0.
- After a Georgetown sac fly in the top of the third, VCU responded with two runs in the bottom half of the inning, capitalizing on a couple fielding miscues by the Hoyas. The Rams would surrender a run in the top of the fourth to make the score 4-3.
- Sophomore Matt Davis blooped a single into right field in the bottom of the fifth to put VCU ahead 5-3.
- In the bottom of the eighth, junior Cooper Mickelson grounded a ball into a hole on the left side and junior Cody Acker, running on the pitch, made a great hustle play to score from second and add an insurance run.
- With two men on and one out in the top of the ninth and Concepcion on the mound, Davis made a great diving play at third to help seal the 6-3 victory for the Rams.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
- Dwyer ended his day after six innings, allowing three runs while striking out four and walking just one.
- Top of the order hitters need to get on base and Farrar did just that, ending his afternoon with a double and two walks. His ability to get on base paid off as he scored two of the Rams five runs.
QUOTABLE
- "It's always fun to win on opening day. The guys had a ton of focus and energy. Pitching set the tone for us today. Both Heath and Daniel did an outstanding job of attacking the stike zone with multiple pitches. Offensively it was pretty impressive to see how hard we competed for our at bats early. Our two strike approach was good all day." -Head coach Shawn Stiffler
