Seth Cutler-Voltz tossed a complete game and
Virginia Commonwealth University posted its second straight shutout
in Colonial Athletic Association play following a 10-0 victory
against Towson University on Friday afternoon in the first
game of a three-game series at John B. Schuerholz Park.
VCU improves its record to 16-14 overall and 6-1
in CAA play, while Towson slips to 9-21, 5-5 in conference
action.
Cutler-Voltz fanned seven, walked three and
scattered five hits. He tossed his second complete game of
the year, while posting his first career shutout.
Seven different Rams collected hits on the
day. Senior Michael Cheatham reached base in
all four trips to the plate as he finished 3-for-3 with a two RBI,
a walk and run scored. Junior Joe Van Meter
went 3-for-5 with a pair of RBI and two runs. Senior
Doug Otto and sophomore Paul Nice
registered two hits apiece for VCU.
Sophomore Brent Mikionis put the
Rams on the board with a solo homerun with two outs in the top of
the fourth.
Cutler-Voltz retired 10 of the first 11 batters
he faced until Towson threatened in the bottom of the frame.
Kevin Collins sent a one-out double into right field and stole
third base before Chris Wychock walked to put runners on the
corners. Cutler-Voltz then induced a double play to end the
inning and the Rams held on to their 1-0 advantage.
VCU would add to its lead with four runs in the
sixth. Otto and Van Meter led off the inning with
back-to-back singles and Mikionis was hit by a pitch on a 0-2 count
to load the bases. Nice came through with an RBI single up
the middle, Van Meter scored on a wild pitch and Cheatham drove in
two runs with his third hit of the day to give the Rams a 5-0
lead.
Towson threatened again in the bottom of the
inning but Cutler-Voltz was able to escape a bases loaded jam as
Mikionis made a snag on a hard hit ground ball at first base and
preserved the shutout.
The Rams added three runs in the seventh and two
more in the eighth.
VCU and Towson will continue with the second game of the series
on Saturday at 1 p.m.
