Box Score DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – Sophomore first baseman
Brent Mikionis (Powhatan, Va.) finished 2-for-4,
but was one of the only bright spots for Virginia Commonwealth
University in an 8-1 loss to Bethune-Cookman Sunday at Jackie
Robinson Ballpark.
VCU, which lost to the Wildcats, 10-6 on Saturday, went 0-for-3
on the weekend to fall to 9-6 overall. Bethune-Cookman is 8-9.
Mikionis was 8-of-13 in three games over the weekend, including
Sunday's two hits. He is now hitting .432 this season with nine
RBI.
The Rams struggled to get their offense going against Wildcat
starter Rayan Gonzalez (2-2), who threw 4 2/3 perfect innings
before Mikionis rapped a single to left center. Gonzalez allowed
just one hit and two walks in seven innings of work. He struck out
seven.
Prior to Sunday, VCU had collected at least 12 hits in six
straight games. The Rams managed three against Bethune-Cookman, two
by Mikionis, as well as a pinch-hit single by junior
Michael Cheatham (Chesterfield, Va.) in the
eighth.
VCU's lone run actually came without the benefit of a hit.
Mikionis reached on a three-base error to lead off the top of the
eighth and scored on a groundout by freshman Paul Nice
(Powhatan, Va.).
Black and Gold starter Seth Cutler-Voltz (Richmond,
Va.) allowed eight runs, five earned, over seven innings
of work and took his first loss of the year. He is 2-1.
Bethune-Cookman jumped on Cutler-Voltz for two runs in the
second inning on a Jeremy Davis single, a followed by a Brandon
Turner double and a Justin Hoyte single. The Wildcats would add
four runs in the third and two more in the fourth to grab an 8-0
lead.
VCU returns to action on Tuesday, March 16, when it hosts
Norfolk State at The Diamond in Richmond, Va. for a non-conference
affair. First pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m.
