RICHMOND, Va.- The Atlantic 10 Conference is proud to announce that VCU alumna Gudrun Hallgrimsdottir (Track & Field) is one of two finalists for the prestigious NCAA Woman of the Year award.Â
The NCAA Woman of the Year award, established in 1991, honors the academic achievement, athletics excellence, community service and leadership of graduating female athletes. Once established as an A-10 nominee, Hallgrimsdottir will have the opportunity to be voted as one of the 10 Division I finalists by the Woman of the Year selection committee. Once the 10 finalists are determined, the committee will select three finalists from each division (nine total) and determine the Woman of the Year from those candidates.Â
Hallgrimsdottir adds this to her impressive list of achievements in her time with VCU. In her career, she amassed five All-Americans and was named as a First-team All-American four times. She also won seven A-10 individual championships throughout her four-year career and set the VCU record for both the hammer and weight throw.Â
She burst onto the scene during the 2022 outdoor season where she was named to the A-10 Outdoor All-Rookie team and was voted as the Most Outstanding Rookie Performance at the Atlantic-10 Championships. That season, she also won A-10 Rookie of the Week and Outstanding Performance of the Week honors.Â
Hallgrimsdotir first qualified for the NCAA National Championship in Eugene, Ore. in the 2023 Outdoor season where she finished 15th in the hammer throw after winning the A-10 championship and finishing fourth in the NCAA East First Round meet. Over her final two seasons, Hallgrimsdottir qualified for the NCAA championships in both the indoor and outdoor seasons. She accumulated a top-5 finish in the outdoor hammer throw in 2024 as well as top-4 finishes in the indoor weight throw in both 2024 and 2025. She capped her indoor career with a second-place finish in the weight throw at the NCAA championships with a personal-best 23.19-meter throw.Â
Along with accomplishments on the field, Hallgrimsdottir excelled in the classroom where she was twice named to the A-10 All-Academic team and finished her career with an appearance on the USTFCCA national All-Academic team. Hallgrimsdottir helped VCU track and field finish with an impressive 3.60 cumulative GPA as a group in 2025 which was the 10th consecutive year that the program posted a GPA of 3.0 or better.
