The short story: VCU placed three underclassmen inside the top 15, including a pair of freshmen, on the way to a sixth-place finish at the Mountaineer Invitational this week.

FIRST TEE
- Freshman Ugo Malcor (74-77-72) continued his outstanding debut season for the Rams. He shot 72 during Tuesday's final round and finished 7-over for the 54-hole event on the way to 11th place
- Junior Mattias Varjun also earned a share of 11th behind a 76-74-73 effort for the Black and Gold
- Freshman Clemente Silva (72-73-79) opened with a first-round 72 Monday and ultimately placed 15th overall for VCU
- The Rams finished sixth amid a field that included host West Virginia and 20th-ranked Oklahoma State. VCU (+35) was within four strokes of a second-place finish. The Sooners (+11) pulled away for an 11-stroke victory. Drexel (+31), West Virginia (+32), Coastal Carolina (+33) and James Madison (+34) rounded out the top fiveÂ
