VAGBERG CAPTURES A-10 INDIVIDUAL TITLE; RAMS CLAIM RUNNER-UP

RESULTS

Atlantic 10 Conference Championship (Day 3)

Location: Orlando, Fla. (Reunion Resort and Golf Club)
Course Info: Par 72, 7,154 Yards
VCU Finish: 2nd (-11)
Top Ram: Adrian Vagberg, 1st (-5)

The short story: Senior Adrian Vagberg birdied his final two holes and shot a final-round 68 to capture the 2022 Atlantic 10 Conference individual title Sunday in Orlando. VCU (-11) placed second overall, two strokes behind Davidson.

FIRST TEE
  • Vagberg and Davidson's Will Davis were tied at 5-under through 16, but birdies by the VCU senior on the No. 17 and 18 holes, a 554-yard Par 5 and a 431 Par 4, respectively, allowed him to pull away for the win. Vagberg's victory will also earn him automatic qualification to the NCAA Regionals May 15-18
  • Sidelined by a back injury for the fall season, Vagberg made his first collegiate victory a memorable one.  Vagberg carded five birdies on the day. He rallied following a bogey on No. 12, shooting 3-under on the final six holes. Vagberg shot 72-69-68 for the weekend
  • Davidson shot 9-under Sunday, the lowest team round of the weekend, and finished 13-under overall to win the championship for the second straight year. VCU, which shot 3-under Sunday, was two strokes back at 11-under. George Mason (-1), Richmond (+1) and George Washington (+1) rounded out the top five
  • Senior Kristian Tannum Donaldson shot 71 Sunday and tied for fifth for VCU, while sophomore Joe Retford (72-70-73) placed 10th
NOTABLE
  • Vagberg is the second Ram to win individual medalist honors at the A-10 Championship, joining Adam Ball, who captured back-to-back titles in 2015 and 2016. He is one of five players in school history to win a conference championship. He joins a club that includes John Rollins, Donny Lee, Ted Brown and Ball
  • As part of the championship weekend, the Atlantic 10 also released its All-Conference honors Sunday. VCU first-year Head Coach Andy Walker was named the league's Coach of the Year, while Tannum Donaldson and sophomore Mikkel Antonsen were selected All-Conference
  • Vagberg rode to victory on the strength of his short game. He posted the third-best Par 3 (2.92) and the second-best Par 4 (3.90) scoring averages in the field
