The short story: Freshman
Charlie Kennedy fired a final-round 69 and held off a host of challengers to claim a one-stroke victory Tuesday at the VCU Shootout – his first collegiate tournament. Kennedy's stunning debut helped lead the Rams (-19) within a stroke of team champion Richmond (-20).
Â
FIRST TEE
- Kennedy, a product of nearby Mills Godwin High School, shook off a bogey on the Par 3 14th hole and made four straight pars down the stretch to claim the individual title. He blitzed through the front nine in 32 strokes on the strength of four straight birdies and built a four-shot lead. St. Bonaventure's Christian Chapman carded a 7-under 65 Tuesday and placed second at 11-under. Richmond's Garrett Clark and George Mason's Will Halamandaris tied for third at 10-under
- Kennedy recorded just four bogeys in the tournament, and his 12-under 54-hole score is tied for the third lowest to par in school history
- VCU trailed by double digit strokes at one point, but shot eight under Tuesday and nearly overtook the Spiders. Richmond (-20) and VCU (-19) were followed by Radford (-14), William & Mary (-14) and Old Dominion (-12) in the top five
- Freshman Will Tate (-4) placed 18th for the Rams, followed by Kristian Tannum Donaldson (-2) in 23rd. Sophomore Joe Retford (-1) was 25
- Senior Cam Barackman carded three consecutive 70s on the way to a seventh-place effort as an individual for the Black & Gold, while teammate and fellow individual Mikkel Antonsen, a sophomore, shot 5-under to place 11th
