THE SHORT STORY

VCU combines strong pitching and offense to defeat Wagner 9-0 Sunday to complete the weekend sweep.

LEADING OFF

  • Steven Carpenter went 3-for-3 on the day.
  • Brandon Henson also had a multi-hit game, capped off by a solo home run and three RBI.
  • Michael Dailey got the start on the bump and threw five scoreless innings.
  • Edwin Serrano picked up his second save of the season.
  • VCU outhit Wagner 10-2.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Dailey set the tone early with a strong performance on the mound. During his five innings of work, the Seahawks got just one hit while Dailey struck out six.
  • Devin Dunn was extremely effective out of the bullpen, relieving Dailey. He pitched two innings of scoreless, hitless baseball.
  • Carpenter continued to be a spark for the VCU offense, leading off the bottom of the seventh inning with a single up the middle to give VCU an early base runner. After a Hogan Brown walk, the Rams were finally able to drive a run across when Norwood delivered an RBI single for a 1-0 lead. Paul Witt then scored two more with an RBI single for a 3-0 lead after seven.
  • The Rams blew things open in the bottom of the eighth with six runs. Brandon Henson single-handedly put another run on the board with a solo home run to get things going in the inning. Singles by Josh Simon and Carpenter and a walk loaded the bases with no outs. Taking advantage of three bases-loaded free passes, the lead had ballooned to 7-0 for the Rams. VCU's offense was capped off by a double from Henson that scored two more for a 9-0 lead heading in to the ninth inning.
  • Serrano made quick work of the Seahawks to preserve the lead and the save.

NEXT UP

The Rams will start a six-game road stretch Wednesday, March 4th with a midweek matchup at North Carolina. First pitch is slated for 3 p.m. ET.
