HAMMOND'S CAREER HIGH HELPS COMPLETE COMEBACK WIN OVER FORDHAM

The short story: Trailing by as many as 10 points late in the third quarter, VCU went on a 20-4 run to take a 52-46 lead with 5:36 remaining and held off Fordham for the win.

OPENING TIP

  • VCU started 7-0 in conference play for the first time in program history
  • Senior center Danielle Hammond scored a career-high 23 points on 10-of-15 shooting. Of her 23 points, she scored 10 of them in the fourth quarter
  • Tera Reed had 19 points, tied a season-high with seven rebounds and added five assists. It marked her 15th game scoring in double figures this season out of the 18 she's appeared in.
  • Taya Robinson was the third Ram in double figures as she went 2-for-3 from beyond the arc and is now 7-for-12 from 3-point range over her last three games.
  • After a slow start, VCU shot a blistering 65.4-percent from the field in the second half and finished the game at 45.1-percent for the game. Fordham was held to a 33.3 shooting percentage from the floor and just 15.8 percent (3-of-19) from 3-point range.
  • VCU dominated in the paint, earning a 38-to-26 advantage in points scored around the basket. 

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Fordham came out firing and built a 14-6 lead at the end of the first quarter.
  • Four straight baskets from Hammond, Robinson and Sydnie Archie late in the second quarter pulled VCU within 25-21 heading into halftime.
  • The Black and Gold battled all the way back to pull ahead in the third quarter at 28-27 with 7:28 left in the third quarter, but Fordham hit back with a 13-2 run to lead 42-32.
  • A 7-0 run to end the third stanza gave VCU momentum heading into the final frame down just 42-39.
  • VCU dominated the fourth quarter, outscoring Fordham 23-10 to take back the lead and shooting 69.2 percent and going 9-of-13 from the floor.
  • The Black and Gold ended the game by making its final four field goals on an 8-0 run to pull away. VCU held Fordham scoreless the final 3:02 of regulation.
