VCU WINS THRILLER OVER RICHMOND, 53-50

The short story:  Taya Robinson knocked down the go-ahead shot with 20 seconds left and the Rams had back-to-back defensive stops to top crosstown rival Richmond in the Sonabank P.O.W.E.R. Crosstown Showdown.

OPENING TIP

  • With a free throw in the second quarter, Tera Reed reached 1,000 points for her career. She finished the game with a team-high 14 points, five rebounds and four assists.
  • Robinson had 13 points on 6-of-12 shooting to go along with seven rebounds and a pair of assists.
  • Danielle Hammond nearly reached a double-double, posting eight points, 11 rebounds and two blocks.
  • The Rams dominated on the glass, earning a 35-24 advantage in rebounds and a 14-1 edge in offensive rebounds.
  • Both teams turned the ball over 19 times in the contest, but VCU scored 17 points off of those turnovers compared to just nine for Richmond.
  • Richmond's Jaide Hinds-Clarke went 8-for-11 from the floor to lead all scorers with 19 points.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Reed drove to the basket and drew a foul within the first 15 seconds of the game to open the scoring.
  • The Spiders responded quickly and the first quarter went back-and-forth until Kseniya Malashka knocked down a pair of jumpers to open up a lead.
  • VCU extended its lead with a 9-2 run in the second quarter and went into halftime with a 26-20 advantage.
  • Richmond reclaimed the lead after going on a 12-1 run over the first five minutes of the second half to take a 32-27 lead with 4:49 left in the third.
  • A layup by Robinson reignited the Rams' offense and they pulled within 38-36 heading into the fourth quarter.
  • VCU's momentum carried into the fourth quarter as the team went on an 11-3 run to go out in front 47-41 with 5:33 remaining.
  • The Spiders bounced back and at one point had an 8-0 run to retake the lead at 50-49, with 40 seconds remaining in regulation.
  • Following a timeout, Robinson received the ball at the top of the key, drove the lane and sunk a floater to regain the lead for good with 20.0 seconds left.
  • After each team traded turnovers, Nyra Williams drew a charge with three seconds left and Reed hit a pair of free throws after being fouled to put VCU up 53-50.
