The Short Story: Freshman guard Jailyn Maddox scored a career-high 15 points as VCU's bench outscored Massachusetts 22-0 to help push the Rams to their third consecutive Atlantic 10 victory.

HOW IT HAPPENED

• UMass jumped out to an early 9-4 lead in the first five minutes of the game.
• UMass was able to hold the Rams to a four-minute scoring drought while the Minutewomen went on an 8-0 run and took a 17-6 lead at the end of the first quarter.
• VCU charged back in the second quarter as the Rams went on a 12-0 run to take an 18-17 lead with 4:24 left before halftime. Maddox drained two 3-pointers during the run.
• The two teams battled back-and-forth before a three-point play from Bria Gibson gave VCU a 23-22 lead at halftime.
• After three lead changes to start the third quarter, the Rams went on a 14-2 run at the end of the third quarter spanning to take a 43-32 lead with with 1:13 left in the quarter.
• A half-court heave from UMass that went in at the buzzer cut VCU's lead to just 43-35 at the end of the frame.
• Maddox pushed VCU's lead to 46-35 with a 3-pointer to start the fourth quarter but the Minutewomen would go on a 10-2 run to cut the Rams' lead to 48-45 with 3:05 remaining.
• Though VCU never lost the lead, UMass would get within 53-52 with four seconds left in regulation but two Thorpe free throws sealed the win.
