Rams End Regular Season With 74-59 Win at Davidson

The Short Story: Senior Adaeze Alaeze a team-high 17 points as VCU women's basketball ended the regular season on a four-game winning-streak with a 74-59 win over Davidson on Saturday. The Rams advanced to 3-1 all-time against the Wildcats.

 

OPENING TIP

  • Alaeze reached double figures for the second straight game to close out the season. The forward also grabbed six boards while dishing out two assists, coming away with two steals and recording a block.
  • Ashley Pegram and Isis Thorpe joined Alaeze in double-figures. Pegram scored 14 points and registered seven rebounds. Thorpe put up 13 points, going three-of-three from three-point range. The junior needs just 13 three's to tie the program's all-time record.
  •  Keira Robinson pitched in nine points, five rebounds, three assists, a block and a steal.  
  • Jessica Ogunnorin chipped in seven points and nine rebounds. Ogunnorin is the team's leading rebounder.  

 

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • The Rams scored the first points of the game on a jumper from Robinson, but found themselves trailing at halftime.
  • As it has done often this season, VCU stormed out of the gates in the third quarter to overcome an early deficit. Down seven at halftime, the Rams went on a 14-0 run late in the third to gain a six-point, 52-46 advantage.
  • After a Wildcat layup and one, Ogunnorin ended the quarter with a jumper to add to the lead to make the score 54-49.
  • Davidson chipped away with a layup to start the 4th quarter, but Alaeze quickly responded with one of her own resulting in the start of another big run for the Rams.
  • Alaeze's bucket kicked off of an 11-0 drive resulting in a 14-point lead.
 

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE

  • As they have done all season, the Rams controlled the boards, outrebounding Davidosn 37-29.
  • VCU was successful from three-point territory, shooting 55.6 (five-of-nine) percent from beyond the arch.
  • The tenacious Ram defense forced double-digit turnovers once again, causing 18 Wildcat turnovers.
  • VCU has one of the top 30 scoring defenses in the league and scored 24 of their points off of Davidson mistakes.
  • With the win, the Rams improve to 21-8 overall and 10-6 in the A-10. VCU ends the regular season as the fifth seed heading into the conference tournament.
  • At 10-6, the Rams finished with their best record against conference foes since joining the A-10.

 

WHAT'S NEXT

  • VCU will next participate in the A-10 Conference Tournament, which will run from Wednesday, March 2nd through Sunday, March 6th to determine a conference champion. The tournament champion will advance to represent the A-10 in March Madness.
