Rams drop heartbreaker to cross-town rivals Richmond, 62-50

The Short Story: VCU traveled to cross-town rival Richmond on Sunday afternoon. The Rams found their way to a hot start, but were unable to stay ahead of the Spiders, as they were defeated 62-50.

OPENING TIP

  • Adaeze Alaeze just missed a double-double (14 points, 8 rebounds), while also tossing out four assists.
  • Ashley Pegram reached double-figures, putting up 10 points. Jessica Ogunnorin fell just short of double-figures with nine points.
  • Curteeona Breelove made her presence felt in the post, pouring in eight points and recording a team-high two blocks.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • VCU shot out to a 6-0 lead in the opening minutes, before allowing Richmond to go on a 9-0 run after that.
  • Richmond took a 15-12 lead after the first quarter, and did not give up the lead the remainder of the way.
  • Richmond opened up a seven point lead with 6:32 to play in the second quarter after a layup from Kylie Murphree, giving the Spiders a 21-14 lead.
  • Ogunnorin, Breelove, and Alaeze each recorded two buckets apiece to lead the Rams back on a 14-6 run up until the halftime buzzer.
  • The Spiders led at the half by a score of 27-24
  • The Rams were able to tie things up at 29-29 just minutes into the second half after Isis Thorpe drained a jumper with 7:35 to go.
  • Richmond would start to pull away, leading 44-38 at the end of the third quarter.
  • VCU would remain close at the start of the fourth until the 3:17 mark, when Richmond pulled away for good, taking the 62-50 win.
BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
  • The Rams missed all attempts from behind the three-point arc (0-for-7) while Richmond dialed from long distance seven times in the game.
  • The Rams outrebounded their opponent 40 to 32, including 12 to six in the first quarter.
  • VCU scored 26 of their points in the paint but only 10 off of second chance opportunities.
  • With the loss, the Rams fall into a tie for sixth in the A-10 standings with Dayton at 6-6, while they fall behind Fordham at 7-5.
