- VCU and American played close as the Rams led 12-11 with 2:13 left in the first before embarking on a 7-0 run to end the first quarter with a 19-11 lead.
- The Rams' lead was 21-13 before the Eagles responded with a 6-0 run to cut the lead to 21-19 with 7:28 left before halftime.
- The Rams would be up 25-20 before American went on another 6-0 run to take a 26-25 lead with 3:08 left in the quarter.
- It was the first lead for American since the Eagles were up 2-1 just 30 seconds into the first quarter.
- The two teams were tied 30-30 at halftime.
