McNamara, Rams take down Central Michigan, 3-1, in home opener

Box Score

The Basics

  • Score: VCU 3, Central Michigan 1
  • Records: VCU (1-1), Central Michigan (0-3)
  • Location: Cary Street Field – Richmond, Va.
  • The Short Story: For the second straight game, freshman Emily McNamara recorded a goal and an assist as the VCU field hockey team toppled Central Michigan, 3-1, in the Rams' 2015 home opener. Senior Taleah Scott and sophomore Alexis Albright also scored in the victory.
How It Happened
  • VCU looked to jump on the board early with Scott blasting a shot off a corner in the fifth minute that went just wide.
  • The Rams would continue the pressure in the first stanza and broke through in the 14th minute when McNamara took a beautiful feed from Kaylee Maunz and found the back of the cage for a 1-0 lead.
  • VCU would dominate the first half, holding the Chippewas without a shot, while firing off 12 of their own and earning five corners.
  • CMU would flip the script to start the second half, taking four of the first five shots after intermission and eventually tying it up at 1-1 in the 47th minute.
  • Less than 10 minutes later, McNamara and Jamee Albright played a beautiful game of give-and-go down the left sideline to nearly put the Rams back on top.
  • The other Albright twin, Alexis, would do just that in the 59th minute, taking a great feed from senior Kendall Farino and putting home her first goal of the season to give VCU a 2-1 cushion.
  • Scott would put the nail in the coffin in the 62nd minute after a scramble in front led to her first goal of the year thanks to a feed from McNamara.
