The Short Story: VCU women's basketball battled a tough 17th ranked Arizona State on Saturday afternoon, upsetting the Sun Devils 57-48 in the desert. This marks the Rams' first victory over a Top-25 opponent since a 58-57 win over #18 James Madison during the '88 campaign.

OPENING TIP

  • Juniors Ashley Pegram and Keira Robinson had big games for VCU. Both played 29 minutes scoring 11 and 14 points respectively.
  • Pegram made four of seven shots from the floor and added three rebounds. Robinson was 6-of-11 and just missed a double-double with eight rebounds.
  • The Rams continued to use a balanced attack on offense with six players chipping in at least six points. Camille Calhoun, Chadarryl Clay, and Isis Thorpe each scored six points.
  • Adaeze Alaeze and Ashlee Mitchell each grabbed five boards and dished out three assists. Alaeze added seven points in a limited role.
  • Jessica Ogunnorin led the Rams with 31 minutes and nine rebounds.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • VCU jumped out to an early 9-2 lead on an Ogunnorin jumper and ended the first period up three.
  • The two teams traded scores in the second period before the Sun Devils went up two. The ASU lead did not last long as Robinson answered with a layup and one.
  • After the break, VCU went ahead 29-20 for their largest lead of the night.
  • The Sun Devils crept back within three but a trey from Robinson gave the Rams some room to breathe.
  • The Black and Gold would not relent in the fourth. VCU outscored ASU 17-14 in the fourth as they pulled off one of the most historic wins in program history.

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE

  • The Rams were dominant as defense continued to be VCU's bread and butter.
  • The Black & Gold limited ASU to 28.6 percent (20-of-70) shooting, including 25.8 percent (8-of-31) in the first half as VCU headed to the locker up three.
  • VCU outscored the Sun Devils in the paint 32-28.
  • The Rams improved to 1-0 against ASU all-time and are now 1-0 versus Top-25 adversaries under Head Coach Beth O'Boyle.
