The Short Story: After a week away from the court, the VCU women's hoops team returned to action with a 63-39 victory against Md.-East. Shore on Sunday. Junior Ashley Pegram put up 17-points and sophomore Curteeona Brelove recorded her first collegiate double-double to lead the Rams past the Hawks.
OPENING TIP
- The week off did not seem to phase Pegram as she put up double-digit points for the 5th time this season. The junior was seven of twelve from the floor and a perfect three-for-three from the foul line. Pegram also recorded five rebounds, three assists, and two steals.
- Brelove had her best game as a Ram, setting numerous career highs. The sophomore made eight of nine baskets for 16 points and grabbed a team-leading 10 boards. She added a team-high three steals, an assist and a block in an all-around effort in replace of injured Camille Calhoun.
- Adaeze Alaeze chipped in nine points and added a steal. Katherine Strong scored eight points in eight minutes off of the bench.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- VCU trailed 11-12 after one quarter of play, but the Rams responded with 24-points in the second to pull ahead to a 15-point halftime lead.
- The Rams closed well, keeping the Hawks under 10 points in the second and fourth quarters.
- VCU's defense held UMES to just 28.6 percent (14-49) shooting, including 12.5 percent (2-16) from beyond the arch.
BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
- The Rams forced double digit turnovers for the ninth-straight game, outrebounding the Hawks 38-26.
- VCU outscored UMES in the paint 34-24. The Ram's proved that one of strengths is the team's depth with 33 points coming form the bench.
- The Rams advance to 5-0 all-time against the Hawks.
