NEWARK, Del. – Sophomore Kelsey
Scherrer (Chesapeake, Va.) scored eight minutes into
the second overtime to give Virginia Commonwealth University its
first ever win over Delaware, 2-1, Friday at Rullo Stadium.
With Scherrer's goal, the Rams (6-3, 1-0 CAA) erased years of
bad memories. VCU had dropped its previous eight meetings to the
Blue Hens (4-4, 0-1 CAA), including four of the last five in
overtime. Friday, instead of heartbreak, the Rams found
jubilation.
"It's so much fun to see how far the girls have pushed themselves
and see everything pay off," said VCU Head Coach Kelly
McQuade. "Especially our seniors and how much impact they
had on today's game. It's really fun to see all their hard work and
sweat come out in the form of these wins."
In the 92nd minute of play, Scherrer took a feed from
senior Marle van
Dessel (Oisterwijk, Netherlands) on the left baseline,
drove to the goal and swung a ball around a diving UD goalkeeper
from three yards out for the winning score. It was Scherrer's
fourth goal of the season.
Scherrer's goal came only after the Rams survived five tenuous
minutes of shorthanded play. Following a yellow card on VCU, the
Rams were forced to play five minutes of overtime down a player.

Despite the disadvantage, the Black and Gold outshot the Blue
Hens, 7-1 in extra time.
"We changed our structure to adapt and the girls really held their
own," McQuade said. "We didn't look like we were down a player. We
really generated attack."
VCU outshot Delaware, 15-14, and out cornered the Blue Hens, 10-9.
VCU junior Erin
Jablonski (Charlottesville, Va.) made seven saves in
goal for the Rams.
Senior Flore van
Dessel (Oisterwijk, Neterlands) (left) staked VCU to a
1-0 lead when she scored on a penalty stroke in the 28th
minute. van Dessel is 2-for-2 on penalty strokes this season.
Delaware knotted the game up at 1-1 when Nicole Onorato scored on
a penalty corner from Michelle Drummonds and Missy Woody in the
67th minute.
VCU will look to extend its three-match winning streak when it
battles Towson on Sunday, Sept. 26 at 12 p.m. at Johnny Unitas
Field.
