Box Score RICHMOND, Va. – Virginia Commonwealth
University and Georgia State University battled to a 14-14,
10-inning tie Sunday afternoon in the finale of a three-game
Colonial Athletic Association series at The Diamond. Georgia
State tied the game with a pair of runs in the top of the ninth but
neither team could scratch across a run before the league's curfew
rule, which assures the visiting team's travel plans remain on
schedule, came into effect.
Sophomore Brent Mikionis went
3-for-6 with a homerun, double and five RBI to lead VCU.
Junior Joe Van Meter finished 2-for-4 with four
RBI, while senior Doug Otto and sophomore
Taylor Perkins each collected a pair of hits for
the Rams.
Georgia State (23-17-1, 7-4,1 CAA) got on the
board first for the third time in the series. Mark Micowski
hit a groundball to the left side of the VCU infield but it took a
hop off the lip of the infield grass and bounced into left center
for a leadoff single. Brett Maxwell then followed with a bunt
single to place runners on first and second with no out.
Micowski stole third base but catcher Nate Furry's
throw got past Van Meter at third and two runs scored to give
Georgia State an early lead.
VCU (22-17-1, 11-2-1 CAA) got a run back in the
bottom of the first after senior Matt Leskiw
singled and scored. Mikionis then tied the game at 2-2 with a
solo home run to leadoff the second inning.
Joey Wood hit a high chopper behind third base
and beat out a long throw from Van Meter to lead off the third for
Georgia State. Bradley Logan followed with a two-run shot
over the left field fence and the Panthers regained the lead at
4-2.
Georgia State added two more runs in fourth on
two hits and a pair of VCU miscues. Justin Malone singled to
lead off the frame and later scored, and Micowski, who reached on a
fielding error, came home after Furry's throw on a steal attempt at
second landed in centerfield.
Five consecutive batters reached to start the
frame and VCU used a six-run fifth inning to take its first lead of
the game at 8-6. Leskiw was hit by a pitch with the bases
loaded before senior Richard Gonzalez chased
Georgia State starter Ryan Moore after he lined a two-RBI double
into right field. Otto drove in a run with a bunt, while Van
Meter and Mikionis each collected RBI singles in the inning.
The bats remained hot for VCU as the Rams scored
five more runs in the bottom of the sixth to go on top 13-6.
Otto sent an RBI single into right, Van Meter lifted a sacrifice
fly into center and Mikionis came through with a bases-clearing
double into left.
However, Georgia State stormed back and pulled
within 13-12 after plating six runs over the next two frames.
Gonzalez drew a leadoff walk to start the eighth
and scored on an infield single by Van Meter and VCU built a
two-run cushion heading into the final inning.
Logan doubled into right center to start the
Panthers' rally and Carl Moniz followed with an infield single to
place runners on first and second with no out. Brandon
Williams lined a one-out single into right and pulled Georgia State
within a run. Jonathan Kolowich then drew a walk to load the
bases but Williams, who was running on the pitch, scored after
Furry's throw sailed into left field.
Neither team could break the tie before the
curfew rule came into effect.
VCU will be back in action on Wednesday, April 28
when it hosts in-state foe Virginia Military Institute at 7 p.m. at
The Diamond.
