Box Score RICHMOND, Va. – Junior Joe Van
Meter (Oyster Bay, N.Y.) drove in three runs and threw
five innings to pick up his first victory of the season and lead
Virginia Commonwealth University to a 9-4 victory over Northeastern
Sunday at The Diamond.
With the win, the Rams completed a three-game
sweep of the Huskies and improved to 13-10 on the year, including
3-0 in Colonial Athletic Association play. Northeastern is 6-8
overall and 0-3 in CAA action.
Van Meter, who provided walk-off base hits in
each of the first two games of the series, gave VCU a 2-1 lead with
a two-out, two-run single in the bottom of the first inning. In
all, the Rams would score five runs in the inning.
Van Meter added another RBI single in the second
inning as VCU grabbed a 6-1 lead. On the mound, the Oyster Bay,
N.Y. made his first start of the year and allowed four runs, three
earned, and five hits in five innings of work. Sophomore
Kyle Pelchy (Yorktown, Va.) and senior
Robbie Andrews (Covington, Va.) combined to throw
four innings of scoreless relief.
Additionally, sophomore Brett Mikionis
(Powhatan, Va.) hit his second home run of the year, a
two-run shot, and finished the day 2-of-5. Seniors
M.L. Morgan (Petersburg, Va.) and Doug
Otto (Jefferson City, Mo.), as well as junior John
Lenherr (Windom, Kan.) and sophomore Taylor
Perkins (Dinwiddie, Va.) also had two hits for the Rams,
who battered Northeastern pitching for 15 base hits.
Sunday's standout performance capped an
outstanding weekend for Van Meter, who was 6-of-15 at the plate and
drove in a team-high five runs.
VCU returns to the field on Tuesday, March 30
when it heads to College Park, Md. to meet the University of
Maryland at 6 p.m.
