VCU COMES UP SHORT ON SENIOR DAY, SUFFERS 67-65 SETBACK AGAINST OLD DOMINION

Box Score

RICHMOND, Va. – Virginia Commonwealth University senior guard Kita Waller and sophomore forward Courtney Hurt each registered a game high 18 points but it wasn't enough as Virginia Commonwealth University dropped its second game in a row following a 67-65 loss against first place Old Dominion University Sunday at the Verizon Wireless Arena at the Stuart C. Siegel Center.

After defeating Old Dominion in Norfolk for the first time in three decades earlier this month, the Lady Monarchs got the revenge they were looking for Sunday and held on for the win.

VCU had a chance to tie or win the game on the final possession.  Waller dove on the floor to corral a loose ball and managed to call timeout with just over 20 seconds remaining.  However, senior forward D'Andra Moss, who had already been involved with last second heroics once this season, missed a jumper with five seconds to go and the Lady Monarchs captured the league's regular season title.

"We certainly had an opportunity to win the game but we experienced some mental lapses down the stretch," said VCU Head Coach Beth Cunningham.  "There was a lot of emotion involved out there today.  We talked about it in the locker room at halftime.  We were playing more with emotion than with our heads.  We needed to focus more on doing the things we know we have to do to win the game."

VCU, which has lost four of its last six games, falls to 18-11 overall and 11-6 in the Colonial Athletic Association, while Old Dominion improved to 16-11, 14-3 in league play and wrapped up the No. 1 seed in the conference tournament.

Moss contributed 12 points, seven rebounds and three steals, while Hurt added 10 rebounds to her 18 points and picked up her ninth double-double of the season.  Junior guard Jessica Taylor added nine points and seven rebounds off the bench for the Rams.

Junior Shadasia Green paced Old Dominion with 13 points.  Sophomore Tia Lewis added 12 and Jackie Cook chipped in 10 in a reserve role.

Old Dominion jumped out to a 9-2 lead over the first 3:24 of the contest and went on top 15-6 on a layup by Lewis with 13:31 showing in the opening period.

VCU responded by scoring eight of the next 10 points and pulled within 17-14 on a free throw by Waller at the 8:31 mark.  However, Old Dominion hit five of its next six shots from the field and used an 11-0 run to pull ahead 28-14, which tied its largest lead of the game, with 5:17 left.

It didn't take long for VCU to get back in it as the Rams used a 9-2 run of their own to cut the Lady Monrachs' lead to 30-25 with just over two minutes to go before the break.

Old Dominion, which shot 59.1 percent (13-of-22) from the field in the first half, took a 33-27 lead into the locker room.

Moss hit a jumper in the paint before Waller drained a wide open 3-pointer less than three minutes into the second half to tie the game at 36-36.

VCU remained within three points over the next five minutes before Jackie Cook hit a triple to give the Lady Monarchs a 47-41 advantage and Lewis put Old Dominion on top 51-43 after a pair of free throws with 9:31 to go.

The Rams reeled off eight straight points, including a pair of three-point plays by Waller, and knotted the game for the fourth time at 51-51.  VCU continued to pressure and eventually took its first lead of the game at 59-58 on a by sophomore guard Jennifer Lane with 3:49 remaining before Waller gave the Rams a three point lead with a bucket a minute later.

Old Dominion tied it up on a trey by Kquanise Byrd on the ensuing possession and regained the lead for good on a jumper by Jasmine Parker with 1:57 showing.

VCU will conclude the regular season on Wednesday, Feb. 3 at Northeastern for a 7 p.m. matchup against the Huskies.
