Box Score NORFOLK, Va. – Sophomore Kelsey Scherrer
(Chesapeake, Va.) provided a goal and an assist, but
20th-ranked Old Dominion used a pair of second half
scores to slip past Virginia Commonwealth University Friday at the
Powhatan Sports Complex, 4-2.
The match provided an opportunity for VCU to secure sole
possession of second place in the CAA, but the Monarchs now hold
that distinction.
The Rams saw their five-match winning streak halted and fell to
12-5 overall and 4-2 in conference play. ODU improved to 8-9
overall and 5-1 in CAA action.
"We executed on corners. We had momentum at the end of the
first half and had them on their heels at the end of the game, but
unfortunately our inexperience showed a little bit," said VCU
Head Coach Kelly McQuade.
Old Dominion's Maarje Van Rijswijk tapped in a deflection in
the 52nd minute to snap a 2-2 tie and give the Monarchs
a lead they would not relinquish. Danielle Clutter added an
insurance goal, her second of the match, in the 63rd
minute.
ODU surged in the second half, outshooting VCU by a 12-2 margin.
The Monarchs owned a 7-0 advantage in penalty corners in the second
half.
Trailing 2-0, the Rams struck back in the 26th minute,
when senior Marle van Dessel (Oisterwijk,
Netherlands) used a feed from Scherrer off a penalty
corner to score her 10th goal of the year. The Black and
Gold tied the score two minutes into the second half when Scherrer
ran down a loose ball and flipped it past the keeper.
Scherrer, a CAA All-Rookie and Second Team All-Conference pick in
2009, leads VCU with 13 goals and seven assists this season.
The Rams will look to keep pace in the race for one of the
CAA's four tournament bids on Sunday, Oct. 24 when they face
William & Mary in Williamsburg, Va. at 1 p.m.
