DAVIDSON, N.C. – Sophomore Kelsey
Scherrer (Chesapeake, Va.) scored the go-ahead goal in
the 53rd minute and assisted on another in Virginia
Commonwealth University's 3-2 victory over Davidson Saturday at
Belk Turf Field.
"This was a good game to pull out a win," VCU Head Coach
Kelly McQuade said. "Davidson is well-coached team
with a similar style of play because of William & Mary
connection. We generated good attacking opportunities and
capitalized on two corners. We did not under estimate them at
all."
With the win, the Rams improved to 11-4, the program's most
victories since 1993. VCU has won four straight and 11 of its last
13 matches. Davidson is 10-5.

Sophomore
Arialle Hess
(Allentown, Pa.) scored the first VCU goal in the 16th
minute of a game on an assist from
Chelsea Hill
(Virginia Beach, Va.). The ball was passed from the right
corner and then tipped into the net. It was Hess' fourth goal of
the season and proved to be the only one of the half.
Clare Perry tied the match up early in the second half when she
converted an assist from Hannah English in the 42nd
minute.
Scherrer answered in the 53rd minute, scoring on a
direct corner from senior Flore van
Dessel (Oisterwijk, Netherlands) and freshman
Stephanie
DeMasi (Virginia Beach, Va.) to give VCU a 2-1 lead.
The Rams would not trail again, giving Scherrer her seventh
game-winning goal of the season. She leads the team with 11 goals
and 27 points this season.
Four minutes later, sophomore Melanie
Marotta (Williamsburg, Va.) scored her first goal of
the season on an assist from Scherrer.
Davidson made a push toward the end that resulted in a goal by
Jennie Mostellar during the 64th minute of regulation.
However, the damage had been done and the Rams came out with the
victory.
"Davidson fought very hard until the end of the game and it was
very good for us to come out on top," said McQuade. "Hopefully,
this will drive us into tomorrow for a 2-0 weekend."
The Rams head to Boone, N.C. to play Appalachian State Sunday at 1
p.m.
