RICHMOND, Va. – Four different Virginia Commonwealth
University players scored goals, including sophomore Kelsey
Scherrer (Chesapeake, Va.), as the Rams coasted to a 4-0
non-conference win over Longwood Wednesday at Cary Street
Field.
With the victory, VCU improved to 10-4 on the year. The Rams
reached the 10-win plateau for the first time since 2004 and just
the third time since 1993. The Black and Gold has won 10 of its
last 12 matches and is 6-1 at home this season. Longwood is
3-12.
After posting a 4-1 mark in five consecutive Colonial Athletic
Association matches, including an emotional overtime triumph over
James Madison on Friday, the Rams began a three-match
non-conference stretch with Wednesday's contest. VCU Head
Coach Kelly McQuade sought to avoid a
letdown.
"This is the time of the season that can be a little bit
scary with midterms and school getting a little bit demanding, and
a lot of teams can witness a slump, and that's not exactly
the right time to be having it." McQuade said. "We need
to continue on the path that we've already set ourselves on
so that it doesn't take away from any of the good wins
we've had."
Scherrer picked up what would be her sixth game-winning goal of the
year when she scored on a cross from senior
Marle van
Dessel (Oisterwijk, Netherlands) from the right side of
the circle 8:30 into the match.
VCU grabbed a 2-0 lead when sophomore Chelsea Hill
(Virginia Beach, Va.) collected a rebound and blasted a
low liner into the lower left side of the cage six seconds prior to
the first half buzzer.
Hill's goal offset what had been a slow start for the Rams.
The Rams stormed out of halftime with back-to-back goals by
freshman Kayla Mueller (Allentown, Pa.) and
Arialle Hess (Allentown, Pa.) in the first six
minutes of the period. Mueller's goal was the first of her
collegiate career. VCU never looked back on the way to recording
its fourth shutout of the season.
"When we came out today, we had to make sure we weren't
still on a high from the win Friday," McQuade said. "At
halftime, we pulled them in, let them know that some people
weren't working as hard as they needed to be off the ball.
Work rate needed to be better all over the place. In the second
half we settled down and started to find each other and had a much
better possession style of play."
VCU outshot the Lancers 11-8 and owned a 3-2 advantage in penalty
corners.
The Rams return to the field on Saturday, Oct. 16 when they travel
to meet Davidson in Davidson, N.C. a 12 p.m.
