VCU CRUISES PAST IN-STATE FOE RADFORD, 70-53

Box Score

RICHMOND, Va. – Senior forward D'Andra Moss (Atlanta, Ga.) poured in a game-high 23 points to lead Virginia Commonwealth University to a 70-53 victory against in-state foe Radford Saturday evening at the Verizon Wireless Arena at the Stuart C. Siegel Center.

VCU snaps a two-game losing skid and improves to 4-2 on the season, while Radford slips to 1-7.

Senior guard La'Tavia Rorie (right) scored 12 points for VCU.  The Charlotte, N.C., native has scored in double-figures in all six games this season and 10 out of the last 11 contests dating back to last year.

Denay Wood registered a team-high 16 points for Radford, while Kaylyn Crosier added 13 points and Kymesha Alston chipped in 11 points for the Highlanders.

"I was really proud of the way we came out and played today," VCU Head Coach Beth Cunningham said.  "It was great to see a real sense of urgency from our team coming off two straight losses."

Radford took an early 7-6 advantage on a jumper by Wood at the 15:35 mark in the opening period but VCU responded by scoring 20-consecutive points spanning eight minutes to take a 26-7 advantage with 7:33 to go.

The Rams would continue to pressure the Radford offense and went up by 24 on a jumper by freshman Robyn Hobson (Leawood, Kansas) with 1:22 remaining and took a 38-17 advantage into the locker room.

Radford opened the second half with a 9-4 run to pull within 42-26 but the Highlanders could only get as close as 15 points the remainder of the game.

Coming off a poor rebounding performance against Richmond last Sunday, VCU responded winning the battle on the boards, 37-21, including a 19-8 advantage in the second half.

"We worked a lot last week during practice on improving our post play," said Cunningham.  "We looked much better on the boards tonight and hopefully that will carry over as we prepare for Winthrop on Tuesday."

VCU shot a season-high 49.1% (27-of-55) from the field and was 5-of-10 from 3-point range, while Radford overcame a dismal first half of shooting to finish 43.5% for the game.

Former VCU assistant and current Radford Head Coach Tajama Abraham Ngongba returned to the Verizon Wireless Arena to face the Black and Gold for the first time since 2004-05, when she served as an assistant at George Washington.  Abraham Ngongba was with the Rams from 2002-2004.

VCU travels to Winthrop for a 7 p.m. contest on Tuesday before participating in the Duel in the Desert Tournament in Las Vegas, Nev., from Dec. 19-21.
