RICHMOND, Va. – Roosevelt Lundy, former VCU head men's soccer coach, passed away at the age of 71.
 
Affectionately referred to as "Rosie," Lundy was the second head coach of VCU soccer from 1983 to 1989, and made history as the first African American coach in program history.
 
Current VCU men's soccer head coach Dave Giffard shared words of appreciation for Lundy's impact.
 
"Our thoughts and prayers go out to the family and friends of Coach Lundy. He was a pioneer here at VCU and a staple in our community," Giffard said. "He was one of many amazing people who opened doors and provided opportunities to the type of young people who have been shaped by VCU and VCU Athletics over the last half-century. He was a wonderful man and will be missed by many."
 
Lundy devoted over 29 years to the VCU community, serving with the VCU Police Department following his coaching career. He served the greater Richmond community for nearly 40 years, continuing his law enforcement career at Virginia Union University.
 
Over his seven seasons with VCU soccer, Lundy led the Rams to two Sun Belt Tournament semifinal appearances and led the Rams to back-to-back double-digit win totals in 1986 and 1987, compiling a career 43-48-11 record. He coached players to 15 All-Conference honors, eight of which were Sun Belt First Team recognition.
 
In addition to head coach, Lundy was Facilities Coordinator at Franklin Street Gym, and started his VCU tenure in 1981 as an assistant coach. Prior to VCU, he was an assistant at his alma mater West Virginia in 1978-80.
 
A native of Dinwiddie, Virginia, Lundy played collegiately as a goalkeeper at Davis & Elkins and West Virginia before playing semi-pro with Pittsburgh Ardon Club and German-American club of Richmond.
